Heartburn Causes

To understand the cause of heartburn, you need to know the relationship between the esophagus and stomach. The esophagus is a tube that joins the throat to the stomach. This long valve lets the food enter from one end and reach to stomach at the other end.

Inside your stomach, an acidic mixture is available that helps in breaking down food for better digestion. The stomach is designed in such a way that it can hold this mixture. When the valve separates, the esophagus and stomach don’t close properly. This results in taking the acid to the esophagus from the stomach.

The process is called reflux which is responsible for a burning sensation in your chest. Some medical conditions that cause reflux include,

  • Gastroesophageal reflux disease or GERD
  • Hiatal hernia (stomach bulges)
  • Pregnancy
  • Medications like aspirin and anti-inflammatory drugs

Other than this, poor eating habits also cause heartburn. For example, eating a large number of meals or eating just before bedtime.

Steps to Follow To Prevent Heartburn

Avoid eating just before going to bed- you need to eat a meal 3-4 hours before going to bed. This gives time to your stomach to empty up some space.

Avoid overeating- no matter who tempting the food is, always eat less than needed. Take small portions of the meal as it lowers the risk of heartburn.

Maintain a healthy weight- excessive weight can lead to acid reflux, this is backed by science.

No smoking- cigarettes contain nicotine that can weaken the esophageal sphincter and this can result in poor gut health.
