The festival of Dhanteras is celebrated every year on the first day of the five-day Diwali festival. Kuber, the god of wealth, is worshipped on this day. Dhanteras means money trayodashi. The day of wealth and the day of Lord Dhanvantari.The day is mainly celebrated for shopping for utensils, gold and silver. Many people also buy electronic goods and vehicles on this day.

On the same day as shopping is auspicious on Dhanteras, donation of some items is also considered auspicious. It is believed that donating on Dhanteras day pleases Maa Lakshmi. Maa Lakshmi blesses her devotees with happiness and prosperity.

White coloured items should never be donated on Dhanteras day. Also, donate whatever you want to donate on this day before sunset otherwise donation will not be considered effective.

Jyotish Shastri points out that taking a loan on this day should be avoided, there may be a lot of challenges in repaying the loan taken on this day.

On this day, one should avoid buying black goods or clothes, iron items, pointed items like knives, scissors, blades, pins, plastic items, steel and aluminium items.

It is also forbidden to buy medicines on Dhanteras day.

Losing a precious object is considered inauspicious on this day so take care of all your precious things on this day.

What to buy on Dhanteras:

On the day of Dhanteras, buying new things like gold, silver, brass is considered very auspicious. Gold itself is in the form of Goddess Lakshmi. Therefore, buying gold and bringing it home means that Goddess Lakshmi is coming to your house. Similarly, silver is also their symbol. This is the reason why there is a trend of buying gold and silver on Dhanteras. The kitchen is the symbol of Annapurna Devi. Dhanya Lakshmi is also a form of Maa Lakshmi. Therefore, kitchen items can also be bought.
Apart from this, buying coriander and buying broom is also very auspicious on this day.
