It's nearly the end of 2020 and we definitely came across various changes in how we pursue entertainment. From movie releases on OTTs to the numerous interesting web series, we had a lot to keep going through all this time that seemed mundane. With platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney+Hotstar, ZEE5, and various others everyone experienced the best of entertainment despite theatres being closed. During this time Bollywood actors who were away from the screen for a long time made a comeback with original and engaging web series. Let's take a glance at the most successful OTT debuts by Bollywood actors.
1. Abhishek Bachchan | Breathe: Into The Shadows
With an amazing psychological thriller Breathe: Into the Shadows, Abhishek Bachchan successfully made his OTT debut on Amazon Prime Video. The series also featured Nithya Menen and Amit Sadh. Abhishek has played a psychiatrist. The story is quite interesting where his daughter gets kidnapped for an unknown motive.
While his daughter is left to the mercy of the kidnapper, he later gets to know that saving his daughter will cost him the lives of some innocent people. While Abhishek Bachchan is quite well at pulling off negative roles, you will appreciate the development of his character throughout the series which in fact, makes it worth watching.
2. Bobby Deol | Ashram
Bobby Deol made quite interesting appearances in 2020. Although his first OTT debut was through Netflix original, Class of '83. He received serious applauds for Ashram. In Class of '83, he played a cop-turned-dean at a police academy that trains special agents. On the other hand in Prakash Jha's Ashram, he played a self-proclaimed godman, Baba Nirala who is a low-key devil veiled under the skin of a saint. Bobby's impressive and bold performance is absolutely appreciable. He carried the entire show on his shoulders single-handedly.
3. Lara Dutta | Hundred
Lara Dutta Bhupati appeared in Hundred, the action-comedy web series as her OTT debut along with Sairat fame Rinku Rajguru. She played the role of an ambitious cop who join hands with a girl, Netra. While Netra has only 100 days to live, she receives training from the former to emerge as a badass undercover agent.
The duo cracks many cases and solves mysteries together. This was one of the best performances by Lara Dutta and wasn't dominated by other superior co-stars like Govinda, Salman Khan, Anil Kapoor, or Akshay Kumar. She has used this opportunity really well to give away an exemplary performance in both action and comedy scenes.
4. Sushmita Sen | Aarya
Sushmita Sen came back to action after a long time with her digital debut for Disney+Hotstar Special series Aarya as Aarya Sareen. She plays a wife and mother who is being forced to carry on her husband's business after his death. She's unknown of the fact that joining the business will drag her to the criminal world with no way back.
Sushmita Sen appears as a badass action star which happened for the first time. She is a mob boss who won't think before killing someone and a loving, protective mother at the same time. Aarya became a commercially successful series too.
5. Arshad Warsi | Asur
Throughout his career, Arshad Warsi has been known for excellent comic roles in movies like Munnabhai M.B.B.S., Golmaal, Dhamaal, etc. However, he was seen in a completely different avatar in his OTT debut for Voot Select Original, Asur. He has played Dhananjay Rajput, who mentors Barun Sobti. Inspired by an American series True Detective, this series is a crime thriller. While the actor was mostly seen in comedy roles until now, it's worth watching to see him perform something different from that zone.
6. Karisma Kapoor | Mentalhood
Karisma Kapoor appeared in ALT Balaji's original, Mentalhood as her OTT debut. Mentalhood can be explained as "a slightly exaggerated handbook for modern parenting" which is peppy and involves comedy. It showcases various complications that are faced in parenthood or motherhood.
It details things that constantly drive all the moms crazy and how they get innovative to deal with it. The actress performed really well as Meira Sharma who chose to raise kids and be with her family instead of focusing on her dream to become a model. Later, she multitasks with a similar group of mothers to make things better.
7. Jimmy Shergil | Your Honor
Despite being a part of Bollywood for so many years now, Jimmy Shergill still has to get his dues from the industry. However, 2020 proved to be the year when everyone could see his true potential. His OTT debut Your Honor was certainly a great decision along with his appearance in Rangbaaz Phirse with Saqib Saleem. The audience is truly impressed by his work in the courtroom drama, Your Honor.
Set in Ludhiana, Jimmy Shergill plays a judge who loses his ethics, moralities, and sense of judgment while his son was involved in a hit-and-run- accident. He goes from being a righteous judge to a father who can cross extremities in order to save his son. The way he performed is absolutely impressive and deserves applauds.
We expect some more great surprises from them in the coming year too.
