What Are Rave Parties And Why Are They Illegal In India?

Bollywood star Shahrukh Khan’s son Aryan Khan and few others recently were taken into NCB custody after getting caught in a rave party taking place on a cruise ship (Mumbai Cruise Drugs Party Case). The said cruise ship was going from Mumbai to Goa. Rave parties are notoriously infamous for illegal practices taking place in secrecy.

Recently, the hype and fashion of rave parties is bustling in the cosmopolitan cities of India like Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Kolkata and Delhi-NCR. Rave parties are like any other party except the only part making it a rave is the availability of drugs and other illegal practices. Rave parties are mostly filled with rich businessmen as it is not easy to get access to such parties. In the case involving Aryan Khan, reportedly NCB got informed about the Rave Party only after someone leaked the information.

When Did Rave Parties Start?

European countries were famous for parties only involving alcohol during the 60s. But, parties took a turn during the 80s and the fashion of rave parties started emerging. All through the 80s and 90s, rave parties started catching a lot of attention from around the world. The word ‘rave’ translates to lively or passionate gatherings. At these parties, people danced to electronic music in the dark with laser lights and drugs doing rounds.

The trend of wild rave parties in India got initiated by the hippies that travelled to Goa. Currently, Goa, Kullu Valley, Pune, Delhi-NCR, Mumbai are major hotspots for wild rave parties. Rave parties are not legal in India, reportedly, due to the involvement of drugs like cocaine, heroine, hashish, marijuana, LSD, MDMA, etc. Sometimes there are cases of molestation in these parties which makes them illegal.

What Happens At A Rave Party?

As said before, entry to these parties can be pricey and once you get in, there is music, dance, food, alcohol, drugs and sexual activities.

A BBC report quotes an NCB official who said that rave parties are organized events for very selective people of a known party circuit. The secrecy of those parties is fully taken care of and thus, newcomers cannot enter the party without having contacts. It is a raving business for drug sellers as well. A normal rave party can last anywhere from 24 hours to 3 days at times.
