Brand endorsements are almost like a second source of income for Bollywood celebrities. They earn around Rs 10-20 crores annually depending upon their popularity. But, endorsing brands sometime put these celebs in trouble because of their ignorance to misleading claims.
Result- trolled by fans as happened in Pan Masala ad but the Department of Consumer Affairs has come up with new guidelines that act as a direct warning to celebs.
They would be restricted for an entire year if found endorsing a product or brand that serves false claims. If any celeb repeats the offence, they will face banning of 3 years. Many believe it’s a right thing to do whereas celebrity management companies are not happy as celebs have less to do with ads/products.
Well, future will tell what effect it will really have. Let’s go back in time and have a look at celebrities who landed in a soup for misleading ads.
Bollywood Celebrities, Endoresements, and Criticism
1. Amitabh Bachchan for Kamla Pasand
Big B even committed a mistake once by appearing in a pan masala ad. The advertisement also had Ranveer Singh where both can be seen having Kamla Pasand. But, Amitbah quickly terminated the contract and returned all money as soon as he got to know that it was a surrogate advertising.
2. Ranveer Singh for Jack and Jones
Ranveer is known for his bold fashion choices but back in 2016, he made a wrong move. He appeared in Jack and Jones ad which was way too sexist and had a tagline ‘Don’t Hold Back, Take Your Work Home.’
Ranveer quickly realized the mistake and apologized as soon as he faced backlash from his fans on social media. Hoardings from 30 cities were also taken down immediately.
3. Priyanka Chopra For Jewelry
Promoting a jewelry brand seems not a problematic thing but for Piggy Chops, it brought criticism. The brand she promoted was Nirav Modi’s jewelry brand. But, the moment she came to know about Modi scam she terminated the contract.
4. Vicky Kaushal for Macho
The Uri star was featured in a commercial of underwear brand ‘Macho’ alongside Rashmika Mandanna. Netizens criticized both for doing a cheap ad where Rashmika was shown attracted to Vicky because of his underwear.
5. Shah Rukh Khan for Fair and Handsome
You must have seen the fair and handsome ad and believed it could actually work. But, several others saw SRK as someone who promotes fairness against natural skin color.
6. Alia Bhatt for Kanyadaan
Alia appeared for Manyavar in a wedding commercial where she made everyone think if she is something to be given away. Fans were undivided over this dialogue and some trolled her hurting religious sentiments while other appreciated her for that.
7. Madhuri Dixit for Maggi
The Dhak Dhak Girl was not even untouched from criticsm. She promoted a new magi oats noodles in a commercial that shows it’s equally healthy as oats. A legal notice was sent to the actress by FDA Uttarakhand for justification on its nutritional value.
8. Hema Malini For Kent RO
The Dream Girl was a face of Kent RO from long and also appeared with her daughter for the promotion of Kent water purifier system. But during covid 19, she landed to a trouble for an ad that featured domestic help as unhygienic and carrier of infection.
The company immediately took down the ad and apologized for it, Hema also posted on twitter expressing her views on it and said the ad doesn’t resonate with her values.
Yami Gautam, Saif Ali Khan, Milind Soman, Kangana Ranaut, and Malaika Arora was also trolled for their choice of ad.
