We are always advised to eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, in order to stay healthy and fit. But are we aware that chemicals sprayed on such fruits and vegetables have not let them remain healthy.

It is known that Pesticides are used by farmers to protect their agricultural produce from insects. And these are recommended to be consumed in a limited amount. But beyond a certain amount these pesticides make fruits and vegetables contaminated and they become harmful to eat.

These contaminated fruits and vegetables come in the category of “Dirty Dozen”. It is called Dirty Dozen because of the increased amount of pesticides and chemicals spattered on their yields. They are not organic anymore. Hence they should be avoided or must be purchased from an organic store that can guarantee you its authenticity.

  1. Apples

   2. Spinach

As spinach is so vulnerable to insects that farmers have no choice than to drench in chemicals to keeps the bugs off.

Though it is observed that Rinsing and Drying Spinach properly before eating may reduce pesticides to some amount. But still organic spinach is always recommended.

   3. Cucumber

Cucumbers are the favourite and crunchy part of salads. But unfortunately this is also included in the list of Toxic fruits and vegetables. Its skin has 86 different pesticides.

Hence peeling off the skin properly may reduce the chances of consuming such pesticides.Hence choose the organic variety and look for dark green and well-shaped cucumbers.

    4. Strawberries

This rich coloured, delicious and antioxidant rich fruit is also overwhelmed with many chemicals. Strawberries are the most chemically overwhelmed crop in South America. These are exported to developing countries due to less severe restrictions in developing countries. Infact a single sample of strawberry showed 13 different pesticides a piece.

   5. Grapes

A single grape comprises of 15 different chemicals. The most dangerous and serious chemical a grape has is ‘Chlorpyrifos’.

It’s an insecticide which had even caused health issues in many farmers and others living or working close to fields. Chlorpyrifos causes coughing, dizziness, headache, nausea and shortness of breath.

   6. Cherry Tomatoes

Cherry Tomatoes indicated 13 kinds of pesticides and fungicides. It contains insecticides known as endosulfins, which is harmful to the central nervous system.

   7. Bell Peppers

Around 15 pesticides are found in Bell Peppers, as this crunchy vegetable is a treat for insects. So, you can imagine how much chemicals you are consuming with every single bite.

  8. Lettuce and other green leafy vegetables

Green leafy vegetables such as Collard, Kale or Broccoli and Lettuce are filled with chemicals. They are strictly recommended to buy organic only or grow on our own.

Since these vegetables are contaminated with pesticides known as ‘organophosphates’ which is dangerous for the nervous system.

    9. Peaches

These sweet and tasty peaches are packed with increased amount of pesticides. Though you can peel peaches to get rid of chemicals but then you will also not able to consume nutrients which it contains.
