Why is Charanjit Singh Channi Trending Along With #MeToo? Find out here.

Last night when the Congress Party announced the name of their new Punjab Chief Minister #ArrestCharanjitChanni began trending on Twitter in India. In 2018, Charanjit was accused of sending an appropriate message to a female IAS officer where he was accused in #Metoo movement. Now as he is set to be Punjab’s new CM, people on social media have dug out his case and are demanding justice. 

After Captain Amarinder Singh Filed for his resignation on September 18th, the 58-year-old was appointed as the next CM of Punjab. However, as soon as he got appointed, the opposition party pointed out his old case, while also blaming Congress Leader Rahul Gandhi for his party choice.

In 2018, a woman IAS officer accused Channi of sending inappropriate texts, however, the case was covered up and no complaints were filed. In May 2021, suo motu notice of the case was taken by the Women’s Commission, Punjab and reopened it, meanwhile seeking a reply from the Punjab state government.

Manisha Gulati (chairperson, State Women’s Commission) also pledged to go on a hunger strike, demanding clarification from the state Government. Gulati also stated that the commission never received an official complaint from the IAS officer. “State chief secretary is a woman and national party president is a woman, yet we fail to give a woman IAS officer the justice?” said Gulati. 

On September 20th, Channi is expected to be officially appointed as Punjab’s CM, people on Twitter are demanding his arrest and justice for the ‘me too’ Case.
