Powerful Ingredients That You Need In Your Skincare

Skincare is a science but it doesn’t need to be complicated. As new brands are hitting the market every day, we are not only spoilt for choices but are also left utterly confused. The key to choose the right product lies in understanding your skin and its needs but also learning about the key ingredients of your product.

Skincare can also be substituted for self-pampering and luxury. So before you make your expensive purchase by giving in to an Instagram advertisement, let us introduce you to the exotic world of skincare ingredients.

AHA (Alpha hydroxy acid)

Physical scrubs can create micro-tears in your skin which leads to various skin problems as the skin barrier has been compromised. AHAs are used to exfoliate the skin without damaging the skin barrier. AHAs are water-soluble acids and they help in peeling the skin surface to reveal even-toned skin. Suitable for normal to dry skin.

Usage: AHA comes in a variety of forms right from facewash to toners and serums. Make sure to start with a lower percentage if you’re new to acids. 2-5% is a great start and you can take it up to 10% when your skin is used to it. Use it only once or twice a week.

BHA (Beta hydroxy acid)

Unlike AHAs, BHAs are oil-soluble acids. It can go deeper into the pores to remove dead skin cells and control excess sebum. This is why it’s appropriate for oily, acne-prone skin.

Usage: 2% BHA is enough to show you results. Again, use it to a maximum of twice a week. Make sure to moisturize your skin well afterward.

Niacinamide

Also known as B3, Niacinamide is a star ingredient. It is used for brightening and hydration and it is suitable for all skin types. It works on acne marks, pigmentation, and other skin inflammatory conditions.

Usage: Since it’s non-irritant active, you can use it both in day and night time. But start gradually, with only once a day. For topical usage, it is available in the percentage of 2-10. Choose one accordingly.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is a favourite for the skin of colour for all the benefits it gives. It is an antioxidant that fights against environmental stressors, promotes collagen production and fades brown spots. Vitamin C can lose its potency if exposed to external elements, so make sure to get s product that comes in air-tight opaque packaging.

Usage: Vitamin C is safe to be used daily but do not use it in higher concentration if you have sensitive skin. Increase the concentration only when your skin can tolerate it.

Hyaluronic Acid

This ingredient is your shortcut to glowy plump skin. It is naturally found in our skin but the amount decreases as we get older. Hyaluronic acid is a powerful humectant which means, it has the ability to draw and retain water in your skin. It keeps your skin moisturized throughout the day.

Usage: If not used correctly, Hyaluronic Acid can dehydrate the skin by pulling water from your skin. Apply it on damp skin and quickly follow it up with a heavy moisturizer or oil.

Preferably use your actives only at night and follow up with sunscreen the next day. Also, remember, under exfoliation is always better than over-exfoliation. So don’t go overboard with your acids. Try not to mix them as it can lead to skin irritation.

Skincare is subjective but a thorough understanding of ingredients can help you in getting your miraculous product. Also, don’t forget that consistency is the key when it comes to skincare. Which one of these ingredients have you used, and what was your experience? Share with us.
