Ratan Tata and Niira Radia are once again in the headlines for their leaked conversation case of 2010. Supreme Court will hear a plea filed by Tata on this matter on Thursday.

The business tycoon had filed a petition in the court in 2011 citing a violation of his right to privacy. The first hearing of this case happened in 2014.

A decade ago, Finance Ministry filed a complaint against former corporate lobbyist Niira Radia after which the IT department tapped her phone.

They recorded more than 5000 conversations between Radia and several politicians, senior journalists, industrialists, and PR honcho Radia between 2007 and 2009.

The event became popular in the media as the Radia Tapes controversy and exposed her influence on general elections and allocation of key ministries.

Ratan Tata’s Involvement in Radia Tapes Controversy

Ratan Tata was the one whose name was in the limelight more than Niira Radia. It is because among those conversations was one between Radia and Ratan Tata. A popular Indian magazine also published their conversation in 2010.

Tata then filed a petition in the Supreme Court saying it is a violation of the right to privacy. He also requested a copy of recorded conversations from the government.

His lawyer also moved the court to get an investigation report prepared by the Income Tax Department so that legal action can be taken against the telecom providers.

After 8 years, SC will again take up the hearing of the famous Radia Tape case in which a three-judge bench will hear the matter.
