Every year, The Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP) releases its annual Global Peace Index. In the report 163 states, countries and territories are ranked based on their level of peacefulness. According to this year, the mean level of global peacefulness got decreased by 0.07 %. This is Majorly due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, as the lockdowns and uncertainty caused a lot of distress amongst people in 2020. Iceland as always has successfully remained the most peaceful country in the world, followed by New Zealand, Denmark, Portugal, and Austria. 

Much like previous years, the top countries named safest are European countries. 8 of the 10 countries at the top of the Global Peace Index are situated in Europe. Let’s look at the top 10 safest countries in the world, in case you're looking to relocate, this might be your sign!

Global Peace Index analysis is based on various factors:

Based on these indicators, a score is obtained for each of the 163 nations included in the report. Where score and the rank is inversely proportional.

Ten Safest Countries in the World

10. Switzerland

Switzerland is the 10th safest country in the world and it is among the countries where the crime rate is very low, despite of being an industrialized & developed country. The country also has a strong economy and high per capita income.

9. Japan

Japan has been in the top ten position of the GPI for 13 years, without fail, due to low crime rates, internal conflict, and political terror. As per the Safe Cities Index from the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), Tokyo is counted as the safest city in the world, ranking first in cybersecurity, second in health security, and fourth for infrastructure security as well as personal security.

8. Czech Republic

Czech Republic stands out for its social equality and low crime rates, ranking 8th in the GPI. The country's fall in rankings is caused by its high involvement in international conflicts, the high number of prisoners per capita, security forces and police assessment.

7. Singapore

Singapore is seventh on the Global Peace Index. Gun violence or other firearms and confrontational crimes are well controlled by the Government and the police making them a rare occurrence in Singapore. The city-state is also the second-safest city in the world as per the Safe Cities Index from the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).

6. Canada

Canada is the 6th safest country according to the index. The crime rate is relatively low in the country even in the big cities, the country also maintains a very high per capita income.

5. Denmark

Denmark is one of the safest and happiest countries in the world, ranking fifth on the Global Peace Index. It is one of the few countries where people feel safe at any time of day or night, including children. Each person in Denmark has access to healthcare without additional fees, tuition-free education, and the elderly are well taken care with the provided at-home care helpers.

4. Austria

Austria is again in the top 10 safest countries. Along with low crime rate and high Human Development Index, Austria also has high per capita income which affects the country’s rankings a lot.

  1. Maintaining its position on top, Iceland is still the most peaceful countries in the world. The country has been in this position since 2008. In Iceland, criminality indicators have improved. With lowest incarceration rate in Europe, Iceland’s rate is 33 per 100,000 people.
