Strong Female Movie Characters From 90s Bollywood

90s Bollywood has its hits and misses but one thing is sure that it has pure nostalgia for a certain generation. The decade is so deeply rooted within us that we have very much become a product of that decade. The 90s Bollywood has given us a lot of amazing music, fashion inspiration and hilarious comedies. We have all grown up watching these films on television instead of phone or laptop.

One thing that I observed during my revisit to these classics was the portrayal of strong female characters. Despite being two-decade-old, 90s Bollywood served us with some strong film characters in movies. Here is a list of films that you should watch solely for their strong female characters. This revisit will surely give you a sense of nostalgia and also a revelation.

 1. Damini, Damini (1993)

Damini is one of the most memorable films of the 90s decade for its address of sexual violence. The film talks about violence against women, class difference and a woman’s fight against the unjust system. You will find the subject still relevant given the continuous rise in sexual violence against the oppressed in India. Damini fights against hypocrisy even when she has to go against her own family members. She takes a stand, speaks up and decides to testify against the perpetrators. Meenakshi Seshadri plays a strong female movie character in this 1993 film.

2. Pooja, Lamhe (1993)

Lamhe is a Yash Chopra classic and you must watch this film for its sensitive portrayal of a love story between an older man and a young woman. The lead characters are played by Anil Kapoor and Sridevi. Sridevi’s character in the film is quite progressive. Once in love, she is not afraid of making the moves. Despite being 20 years younger, she never doubts her love for the much older Kunwarji (Kapoor).

3. Mili, Rangeela (1995)

This 1995 blockbuster was a hit for several reasons. This cult hit is directed by Ram Gopal Verma and the music direction is by AR Rehman. Urmila plays a middle-class woman who dreams larger than life. She is so busy pursuing her dreams that she doesn’t notice men falling in love with her. It was a great shift from women’s only job in movies at that time was to fall in love. Mili is spunky and lively. She is a strong female film character from 90s Bollywood.

4. Annie, Khamoshi: The Musical (1996)

A movie with a peculiar plot where characters come to life due to flawless acting by leading actors. Khamoshi is a tale of Annie, played by Manisha Koirala, who seeks the understanding of her deaf-mute parents in her pursual of music. The movie stars Salman Khan opposite Manisha Koirala. Annie is not apologetic neither she is afraid of following her dreams. Her character has dilemmas like any other human being and that’s what makes Annie’s character beautiful.

5. Jyoti, Khoon Bhari Maang (1998)

Rekha plays the role of a vengeful femme fatale in this 1998 movie. Directed by Rakesh Roshan, Khoon Bhari Maang is a classic tale of revenge with a glamorous twist. Rekha plays the role of a widowed woman. A rich man, played by Kabir Bedi, marries a widowed woman and tries to kill her for money. She survives, returns after plastic surgery and takes her revenge.
