On Tuesday, PPCC chief, Navjot Singh Sidhu, filed for resignation just two days after the swearing-in of the new Punjab Congress Cabinet. He tweeted out the letter to Sonia Gandhi, stepping down as state Congress chief, from his official account. What can be the reason for this step just a few days post-resignation of Capt. Amarinder Singh as Chief Minister of Punjab.

1. Cabinet Composition
A few hours before the New Cabinet swearing, a total of 6 Ministers from Doaba Region sent off a letter to Sidhu telling against the promotion of Rana Gurjit Singh, explaining his resignation from the Ministry in 2018 due to alleged involvement in Sand Mining Case.
It is said that Sidhu was also against the up-gradation of the Kapurthala MLA, but Congress went ahead with the move regardless, choosing to remove Kuljit Singh Nagra instead, the working president of PPCC. Kuljit was considered to be close to Sidhu.
2. Portfolios Issues
It is learnt that Sidhu was not in the favour of giving the important Home portfolio to Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, deputy chief minister. Sidhu was in favour of the CM controlling the department, but it was reportedly given to Randhawa. Earlier, Sidhu had turned down the move to promote Randhawa as the CM, suggesting that if the party wants a Jat Sikh face, he should be the choice.
3. New AG
The Congress government assigned APS Deol, the senior advocate as its advocate general on Monday evening. Which led to the government coming under danger from the Opposition. Deol was till recently the counsel for prior DGP Sumedh Singh Saini, he was the police chief during the incidents of police firing on protesters.
Deol successfully saved him and got him blanket bail in 4 such cases filed by the Punjab police. Sidhu supporters claim he was peeved at this move as it seemed to contradict the government resolution to punish those who were involved in the police firing on protesters at Behbal Kalan.
4. New Appointed Admin
On July 19, Sidhu was appointed as the PPCC Chief. He failed to get any officer of his choice on major posts, not even the Punjab Police chief. It is reported that Razia Sultana wife of Sidhu’s adviser, former IPS officer Mohd Mustafa, also quit the Channi ministry hours later Sidhu’s resignation.

5. A Resurgent Channi
Sidhu fancies the top post, which comes as no secret. State Congress in-charge Harish Rawat’s made a remark, that the party would compete in the 2022 elections under the Sidhu, to which the opposition of Congress Party forced him to control his statement.
Also, as CM Channi was in news recently, and the political watchers began to comment that he wasn’t a “watchman” warming the seat for Sidhu. This may have made Sidhu uncomfortable, who was anyway increasingly feeling powerless.
