Scientists in France have identified a new type of coronavirus with more mutations than the Omicron variant. The emergence of new variants, which may have originated in Cameroon, according to research, includes both the N501Y and E484K modifications to the spike protein. At least 12 cases of this new type have been reported near Marseilles, and they have been linked to the African country of Cameroon.
"The dynamic set and phylogenetic status of the genomes found here reflect on the previous different interpretations we have coined for IHU," say the authors of the study.
"This data is another example of the uncertainty of the emergence of SARS-CoV-2 strains, as well as their being introduced elsewhere from abroad," they added.
B.1.640.2 has never been seen in other countries or labelled separately under World Health Organization (WHO) research.
According to a paper submitted to medRxiv, the genomes were found in the next generation sequence with Oxford Nanopore Technologies tools in GridION.
“Fourteen amino acid substitutes, including N501Y and E484K, and 9 extracts are found in spike protein. This genotype pattern led to the creation of a new Pangolin list named B.1.640.2, which is a group of phylogenetic sisters in the old genealogy of B.1.640 renamed B.1.640.1, ”states the study paper.
Epidemiologist Eric Feigl-Ding posted a long post on Twitter stating that new alternatives are still emerging but do not mean that they will be too dangerous. "What makes the difference very well known and dangerous is its ability to replicate due to the number of mutations it has in relation to the original virus," he said.
"This is where the" alternative concern "- like Omicron, is highly contagious and avoids the immune system in the past.
The Omicron variant was found in a sample taken in South Africa on November 24 last year. Since then, it has spread to more than 100 countries. In India, it has infected nearly 1,900 people.
