These five women made it to the Forbes list of America’s Richest Self-Made Women. Together their net worth is $4.6 billion.
Forbes lists out America’s Richest Self-Made Women every year. This year it featured five women of Indian origin which included:
- Indra Nooyi, Pepsico’s former chairman and CEO
- Neerja Sethi, co-founder, Syntel
- Neha Narkhede, co-founder and former chief technology officer of Confluent
- Jayshree Ullal, president and CEO of Arista Networks
- Reshma Shetty, co-founder of Gingko Bioworks.
Ranking 91 on the list, Nooyi has a net worth of $290 million. After spending more than 12 years at PepsiCo on the top post, the former chairperson and CEO bid goodbye to PepsiCo. Later she dedicated her time to environment-friendly practices and working with promoting healthier products. Nooyi was brought up in India and went to yale for her MBA. Later she joined the board of Amazon in 2019.
President and CEO of Arista Networks (since 2008), Jayshree Ullal, was ranked 16 on the Forbes list. With a net worth of $1.7 billion, Ullal owns 5% of the computer networking firm Arista Networks’ stock. Ullal studied electrical engineering at San Francisco State University and went on to study engineering management at Santa Clara University. She joined Snowflake’s board of directors, a cloud computing company, which went public in 2020.
With a net worth of $1 billion, Sethi ranks 26th on the Forbes list. Co-founder of the IT consulting and outsourcing firm Syntel in Troy, Michigan. Her husband is the other founder of the firm, they started the company in their apartment in Troy, Michigan. Sethi studied at Delhi University for her bachelors and her MBA. A French IT firm Atos SE bought out Syntel in October of 2018 for $3.4 billion, raising her stake for up to $510 million.
Ranking 29th on the list, Narkhede holds a net worth of $925 million. Narkhede is the co-founder and former Chief Technology Officer of cloud company, Confluent. Narkhedepursued Bachelor of Science in Engineering from the University of Pune and studied Masters of Science in Technology at Georgia Tech. Narkhede was pertinent in the development of the company LinkedIn, she developed the open-source messaging system known as Apache Kafka which handles the site’s huge data influx. 8% of the company is owned by Narkhede’s family, which went public in June 2021 at a $9.1 billion valuation.
39th on the Forbes list, Reshma Shettyco-founded Gingko Bioworks, it is a biotechnology company that uses data analytics and robotics to speed up the process of discovering and making new organisms. She has a net worth of $750 million. Gingko was founded by Shetty with her husband Barry Canton and the company is supposed to go public in a $17.5 billion SPAC deal. Her company helped up in pacing the testing facilities during the pandemic and also opened its Boston facilities for research into the coronavirus.
